Italian Parmesan Bread

This savoury bread is great to serve with lasagna or spaghetti.

Ingredients

Italian Parmesan Bread1 package yeast
1 cup warm water
3 cups flour, divided
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons dehydrated minced onion
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
Melted butter

Directions

  1. In large mixer bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
  2. Add 2 cups of flour, 1/4 cup butter, egg, sugar, salt and seasonings. Beat at low speed until mixed, about 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium and continue beating for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in remaining floour and 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese and beat until smooth.
  4. Cover bowl and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Stir batter 25 strokes. Spread batter into greased 1 1/2 quart casserole. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.
  6. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees F. for about 35 minutes, until golden brown. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes before removing from casserole.

Notes

If using quick rise yeast, skip step 1, add yeast to dry ingredients in mixer bowl and then add water. This bread can also be made in a bread machine (bread machine version is shown in the photo) - click here for bread machine recipe.
